Examples

Below are several short examples of the kind of edits you might expect to get if you choose my services.

Note: Although those are representative samples, no actual customer content or names are presented here. All text is used and reproduced with the permission of the author.

Original submission

See PDF here

This is the original draft as submitted by the customer. It is very typical of the state in which a first draft for a fiction book is delivered, for a project that is progressing well and is not suffering from structural problems.

Consultation / Manuscript evaluation

see PDF here

This is the free consultation letter sent to the customer to assist them in choosing the appropriate service. It contains a brief evaluation of the submitted text from an editorial standpoint, as well as recommendations for subsequent edits.

It is also representative of an editorial letter that will be sent if you choose manuscript evaluation, although the full letter would be obviously much longer and more detailed.

Line edit

See PDF here

This is the same story after a round of line editing. Although still clearly the same story, the copy has been substantially touched up, improving the clarity, the flow, and the pacing. A line edit is the usual recommendation for a first draft.

Copy edit

See PDF here

This is the same story, but with a round of copy editing applied instead of a line edit.

Although still a definite improvement, this copy doesn't read quite as well as the one which underwent a full line edit. This is typical—a first draft will almost always benefit most from a line edit, with a copy edit being appropriate for texts which had already received substantial editing work but need more, or texts which had to go back to editing for some reason (such as a rework late in the process).
